Look, people, now is the time to talk about guns.  Now is the BEST time to talk about guns.  Now is when people are listening.  Acting like it is somehow offensive or disrespectful to “politicize” a tragedy is a ridiculous idea, because if you don’t think that any of these acts were political, you have another think coming.

I’m a Republican because I’ve lived a privileged life, whether I realize it or not. I’m comfortable assuming that because I had the tools to be successful at my disposal, they must be just as accessible to everyone else, and people who aren’t as successful as me just didn’t try hard enough. I’m a Republican because I don’t believe in the government controlling my life, but I believe in it controlling the lives of people who are not like me. I am Republican because I enjoy the advantage of being a white, heterosexual Christian, and I am a Republican because I want that to continue.

I wonder how many people picked up the contrast of the two multiple sclerosis stories from the nominees’ wives. Ann Romney received the very best treatment available to put her condition in remission. Michelle Obama’s father kept going to work and painfully climbing the stairs back to the apartment every day. This is the story of the two health care systems in America.

GOP Platform Calls for Broader Gun Rights, Unlimited Clips

Because if I could think of a step in the right direction for America after, oh, five or six mass shootings this summer, it’s definitely letting anyone with a gun have it anywhere, “defend themselves” (i.e., shoot someone) in any place where they have a legal right to be, and letting them load up on as much ammo and as many clips as they want.

What could go wrong?

10 Things the GOP's New Platform Hates About You

  1. Women, shut up and let the zygotes talk.
  2. Eat shit, rape victims.
  3. Fuck you, sick people.
  4. Kiss our puckered white asses, young people who weren’t going to vote for us anyway.
  5. Quit whining, women in developing countries.
  6. Go to hell, immigrants (and “immigrants” means “Mexicans”)
  7. Bless your little hearts, female soldiers.
  8. Ugh, just get out of my face with your crap, gays.
  9. Muslims, go back to Muslim-town.
  10. LOL, DC.

The fucking bullshit pseudoscience being thrown around in the political sphere seems to be far worse than it ever has been. Michele Bachmann stood up in front of Congress and said that CO2 can’t be harmful because it’s natural (!!!!) and she wasn’t laughed out of town. It was barely a blip on the radar. Congresspersons are saying demonstrably false things on national television but we have to handle them with kid gloves because somehow it has become okay to not “believe” in science. They continue to get elected to fucking public office even though they say things that don’t stand the basic common sense test. If someone can’t pass a middle school earth science test, they shouldn’t even be allowed on the ballot. Period.

Honestly, I am as pro-choice as they come, and anti-gay rhetoric makes me want to punch things, and I am sick to death of people who have never even MET a poor person judging welfare recipients, but the thing that makes me angriest is this. That people who actually matter are saying legitimately false, illogical, easily disproven things and not being called on it by their fellow Congresspersons or the “mainstream media” (the one time I will quote Sarah Palin) or their constituents. What is this bullshit, and how do I make it stop?

American Becomes Laughingstock of Canada After Letter to Editor Lamenting Lack of Handgun During Mild Confrontation

“What concerned me is two young men just approached us and stopped us, stopping us by being in our path, and [began] talking to us without even being welcome to talk to us. They just took it upon themselves to yell at us,” Wawra told CBC News, adding that “he should have the right to protect himself if things had escalated.”

Translation:  I should have been able to shoot these two men for speaking to us.

Good going!  ’MERICA.

14 Wacky "Facts" Kids Will Learn in Louisiana's Voucher Schools

In short, Bobby Jindal approved a program to help out Louisiana’s failing school system by funding vouchers so kids could go to private school.

Problem is, a large number of these private schools are ALSO evangelical Christian, and buy their textbooks from A Beka Books and Bob Jones University.  These are some of the gems from the textbooks they’ll be using:

  • Dinosaurs and humans existed simultaneously
  • Gay people don’t deserve civil rights any more than rapists and child molesters do
  • Slavery was actually pretty cool
  • The KKK was a force of good
  • The Depression was not even a thing
  • Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson were untalented hacks
  • God used the Trail of Tears to bring Native Americans to Christ
  • Communism is still a huge threat

And other lovely items.  Go ahead, go see for yourself.
