Acoustic Levitation

Using sound waves to levitate individual droplets of solutions containing pharmaceutical drugs and drying them in mid-air. Why do this? This is useful because most of the drugs on the market are either amorphous or crystalline and the crystalline form doesn’t get absorbed by the body. So levitating the solution allows the drug to be made into an amorphous state (by evaporation) because if it were to touch any surface it would simply crystallize. They call this “containerless processing”.

The frequencies used are just above the audible range at about 22 kilohertz and when the two speakers are aligned they create two sets of sound waves, perfectly interfering with each other creating a phenomenon known as a standing wave. This allows the objects to levitate in areas within the waves known as nodes as the acoustic pressure is enough to cancel the force of gravity.

Hardcore conservatism’s loathing of science has lurked around GOP politics for so long that its easy to forget how nasty it is. Over 40 years, that disdain has slid from “pointy-headed intellectuals” to something very like a jock slapping a math book out of a kid’s hands and saying, “NICE NUMBERS, FAG.” But this is what you do when you can’t crunch the numbers yourself or when they will not save you. You shoot the messenger.

The fucking bullshit pseudoscience being thrown around in the political sphere seems to be far worse than it ever has been. Michele Bachmann stood up in front of Congress and said that CO2 can’t be harmful because it’s natural (!!!!) and she wasn’t laughed out of town. It was barely a blip on the radar. Congresspersons are saying demonstrably false things on national television but we have to handle them with kid gloves because somehow it has become okay to not “believe” in science. They continue to get elected to fucking public office even though they say things that don’t stand the basic common sense test. If someone can’t pass a middle school earth science test, they shouldn’t even be allowed on the ballot. Period.

Honestly, I am as pro-choice as they come, and anti-gay rhetoric makes me want to punch things, and I am sick to death of people who have never even MET a poor person judging welfare recipients, but the thing that makes me angriest is this. That people who actually matter are saying legitimately false, illogical, easily disproven things and not being called on it by their fellow Congresspersons or the “mainstream media” (the one time I will quote Sarah Palin) or their constituents. What is this bullshit, and how do I make it stop?

I drew this in response to ‘Science: It’s a girl thing!’ which is this ridiculous video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZtMmt5rC6g I work in a lab, as a female scientist. This be crazy!

Love this lol, can’t wait to see the backlash from the female tumblr community

They shouldn’t “backlash,” unless they don’t understand satire!  Which I know a lot of people (sadly) don’t.
